Ramnavami : Birthday of Lord Rama

Ram Navami is the celebration of the birthday of Lord Rama. This festival is celebrated on the 9th day of Hindu Lunar Year. Hindus usually carry out Kalyanotsavam (marriage ceremony) with idols of Rama and Sita at their houses. Then at the dusk the god are taken for caval cade on street.

The rule of Rama has become similar with a duration of harmony and good fortune. According to Mahatma Gandhi, he also used the same statement to describe how India should be after independence.

Ram Navami falls in the month of March or April. The Day starts by offering a prayer to sun early morning. At the time of birth of Lord Rama a special prayer is said. In India, mainly in the Northern regions, a special celebration that attracts many people is the Ramnavami pageant. The speciality of this Ramnavami Pageant is that the four people held in the decorative chariot elaborate Rama, Sita, Laxman, and his loyal Hanuman and the chariot is then taken for procession. On this day the people clean their houses after which the idols or photos of Lord Rama, Sita, and Laxman are placed on the platform for the puja. Flowers and aggarbathi is placed in front of the idols. Prasad, rice, aipun, water, roli, bell, flower. Bhajans are also recited in the name of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Laxman.

On the Ramnavami day all the youngest female members apply tilak to all the male members in the family. In the beginning of puja the water, roli and aipun is sprinkled on god and after that rice is showered on the idols. People then attend the “Arti” after which Ganga jal is sprinkled over the gathered people. Then Prasad is distributed to all the people. Bhajans are sung continuously on the ramnavami day.
